Pain/Injury Resources
What can a family doctor do about muscle/joint pain?
- Most muscle/joint pain can be resolved with basic exercises, physiotherapy or over-the-counter medications and do not necessarily need to see a doctor – please review the below reasons in which a family doctor can be helpful.
- if you have injured an area and are worried about a fracture please make an appointment with us to get a requisition for an X-ray
- if you are having abnormal symptoms such as numbness or weakness, skin rash etc
- if you are experiencing prolonged pain and not seeing improvement with basic exercises, physio or over-the-counter medications please book an in-person visit for examination
- Online resources for home exercises – shoulder, hip etc (link not active yet)
- Recommended physiotherapists/massage therapy (a doctors referral is generally not required)
- Simply Less Pain Physiotherapy
- Alpine Athletics Kinesiology
Lower Back Pain
Please review the options regarding management of lower back pain/sciatica, sprains and injuries
- Chronic back pain is like any other chronic disease, it often requires daily maintenance therapy (exercises) to treat acute flares and prevent future problems
- Does my back pain need to see a doctor?
- Not all back pain requires a doctors assessment. Reasons to see a doctor would be if you have nerve symptoms (weakness or numbness), pain not responding to over-the-counter medications, if you have a personal history of prior or active cancer or pain lasting longer than 6 weeks
- If you have sudden nerve symptoms, new stool incontinence, inability to urinate, numbness in your groin area, fever or trauma (fall or car accident etc) – please go to the Emergency Department as soon as possible
- Do I need imaging of my back pain with x-ray/CT/MRI?
